Carter Machinery Company, the authorized Caterpillar dealer serving Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and Washington D.C. is hiring a General Construction Sales Manager in Baltimore, Maryland. The General Construction Sales Manager position is responsible for Caterpillar and Allied product sales, customer relationships, territory market share, profitability and account coverage for the Machine Sales Division. Seeking candidates with a minimum five years in sales management experience in construction industry, including leadership experience. Experience with Caterpillar equipment is preferred but not mandatory. Bachelor's degree in a business-related field preferred.  

Requirements for the General Construction Sales Manager position include:

  • Thorough product knowledge with the ability to effectively lead team.
  • Must be a dedicated self-starter.
  • Must be able to guide sales personnel in the development and execution of action plan that produce sales results.
  • Must be able to monitor business environment to support management in identifying and addressing business opportunities and challenges.
  • Excellent customer satisfaction skills and the ability to build strong internal and external relationships.
  • Must be a good listener with excellent written, verbal and presentation skills. 
  • Strong PC skills and the ability to self-develop and adapt to changing technology.
  • Must be willing to travel as needed and work hours required to meet job and customer demands. 
  • Frequent travel is required – overnight or out town via car or airplane.
  • Must possess ability to communicate using a telephone and a computer.
  • Must be able to handle large volumes of work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to interpret data and make quick decisions.

Compensation Range $140,000 - $170,000 a year (base plus commissions)

This is a sales position with a base salary plus monthly commissions. Commissions are based on the type of commodity or product sold or rented, with varying rates depending on the product category.

Physical requirements must be met for the General Construction Sales Manager job, including regularly being required to stand; walk and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may occasionally lift and /or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and ability to adjust focus.
